Joe has been a practicing landscape architect in the greater Chicagoland area since he graduated from Iowa State University in 1990. He is a registered landscape architect in Illinois, Indiana and Texas; a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA); the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) and a Council of Landscape Architectural Review Boards (CLARB) Certificate holder. With over 30 years of experience in the landscape industry, including 22 years in the design-build sector, Joe has a strong hands-on working knowledge of design and detailing as well as the entire installation process. During this time he also acted as a consulting LA to numerous architects, developers, engineers, home builders and landscape contractors. This work involved plan preparation of over 1000 projects for the municipal permitting process as well as providing expert testimony when necessary.
Joe also served as director of design and senior landscape architect at one of the Midwest’s largest landscape construction companies for a majority of his career. This experience contributed greatly to his project management and leadership qualities. Joe's expertise today focuses mainly on landscape plan preparation for the municipal permitting process as well as other similarly challenging and creative projects. He is also the contracted landscape inspector at one of Illinois largest municipalities and has performed in this role since 2016 . His goal is to apply his insight, creativity, knowledge and experience into each project in order to make them economical, while still being eco-friendly and aesthetically pleasing.
"It all started with my upbringing..."
"Living in a small rural community with natural areas within close proximity, I found myself outside most of the time. Helping my grandmother tend her large garden and helping with chores on her farm is a fond memory. I was in scouting and eventually earned my Eagle Scout award. This process helped develop my honest character and the great appreciation for nature that I have today. During high school I attended Grundy Area Vocational Center (GAVC) and participated in the building trades program where I received the Golden Hammer Award my senior year. This two year hands-on program involved learning all aspects of the construction process including construction of two homes. Shortly after high school, I also won awards in two juried art exhibitions at the Laura A. Sprague Art Gallery. I contribute my artistic ability to my Mom who was an art teacher and artist. During college, I worked various summer jobs including draftsman, carpenter's assistant and landscape laborer. I also worked at the ISU Horticulture Garden as a maintenance assistant and was Co-President of the Student Society of Landscape Architects (SSLA) during senior year. These various roles added experience and complimented nicely to the required skill set of my career in landscape architecture. But, enough about me, what can I do for you?"
